SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA  (2002) We stayed in our usual winter quarters, a rented beach apartment with views of dolphins, sea otters and pelicans; then lived for the summer in faculty housing on the University of California/Santa Cruz campus; wrote a book manuscript about our travels and sent it to eight publishers; some interest, but no acceptance - yet!

SAN FRANCISCO   (July-August 2003) Joan diagnosed with tuberculosis; postponed a planned eight-month trip to South America, rented a flat in San Francisco and explored the city for two months

CALIFORNIA CAMPING  (September-October 2003) Camping for five weeks in Yosemite National Park plus three other parks in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, during the crisp, colorful autumn
